SHOP ‘n SAVE LAUNCHES S&H GREENPOINTS
SUPERVALU retailers become first new locations to offer the award-winning customer loyalty program in 2002; More supermarket operators to follow.

Pittsburgh, January 20, 2002 – SHOP ‘n SAVE Supermarkets, a retail banner of SUPERVALU Inc. (NYSE—SVU), announced today that it is launching the S&H greenpoints digital rewards program from The Sperry & Hutchinson Company, Inc. (S&H). Shoppers at 80 of the company’s stores in Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia will be able to participate in one of the fastest growing loyalty programs in the nation starting Sunday, January 20, 2002. SHOP ‘n SAVE joins Lowes Foods, Foodtown and Carter’s Food Centers as retailers offering the S&H greenpoints program to their customers.

"The S&H greenpoints program shows our commitment to our shoppers by delivering extra value each time they shop our stores. The program is also a key point of differentiation in the very competitive markets we serve," said Bob McCartney, Vice President of Retail Marketing, SHOP ‘n SAVE. "Based on what we’ve seen at the company’s other retail partners, we expect the S&H program will deliver improved financial performance and added market share within a short time period."

The greenpoints program is being launched in 80 SHOP ‘n SAVE locations and customers can enroll at their local store. They earn 10 greenpoints for each dollar spent and can see the current balance printed on the receipt. Shoppers can redeem their greenpoints by selecting from more than 1,000 rewards featured in a special catalog. The rewards range from movie tickets and household appliances to DVD players and travel packages. And soon, shoppers will be able to use greenpoints directly at checkout for free or discounted grocery items. S&H greenpoints catalogs will be distributed free of charge at SHOP ‘n SAVE supermarkets or shoppers can use the online catalog at www.greenpoints.com.

"The addition of SHOP ‘n SAVE marks a great start to the year for S&H greenpoints, and continues our effort to offer the program at retail locations throughout the country. We are confident that SHOP ‘n SAVE will quickly see the same positive marketplace results that our other partners are experiencing," said Rod Parker, president and CEO of S&H greenpoints. "There are now about 300 stores participating in the S&H greenpoints program, and we fully expect the figure to increase significantly by the end of the year."

The digital reinvention of America’s beloved Green Stamps, S&H greenpoints offers SHOP ‘n SAVE customers a way to earn rewards for their everyday purchases. Shoppers will receive 10 greenpoints per dollar for every dollar they spend (excluding beer, wine, services and taxes) and can also earn bonus greenpoints on selected items throughout the store.

Additionally, greenpoints can be earned at the S&H shopping portal at greenpoints.com, which features more than 100 premiere merchants, including Eddie Bauer, the Disney Store, and The Sharper Image. Other partners include Hertz, Earthlink and Sprint. There’s also an S&H greenpoints Visa card that members can use to earn greenpoints anywhere Visa is accepted.

About S&H greenpoints
S&H greenpoints is the digital reinvention of S&H Green Stamps and The Sperry & Hutchinson Company, Inc., which has been in the rewards business for more than 100 years. In early 1999, S&H was reacquired by a group of investors led by a member of the founding Sperry (Beinecke) family to launch the company into the digital economy with www.greenpoints.com and S&H greenpoints, a branded digital rewards currency. The greenpoints program operates on the proprietary S&H InfoPilot technology. (S&H, greenpoints, and Green Stamps are registered service marks of The Sperry & Hutchinson Company, Inc.)
